MEET SKIP

Hello, I'm Skip – Your Neighbor and Folly Beach City Council Incumbant

I am Skip Fink and, along with my wife 'Sam,' I have proudly called Folly Beach our home for the past 12+ years. Today, I write to you not just as a neighbor, but as an incumbent candidate for City Council re-election, hoping to earn your trust and your vote.

Since you elected me last April to fill an unexpired term on Council, I’ve worked hard to understand the inner workings of our Folly Beach government—learning how the sausage is made, so to speak. While I bring experience from serving on the Governor’s staff, and working in state government on military and base closure issues, becoming an effective Councilman here meant diving into the unique character and needs of our beach community.

During my term, I’ve worked on my “focus areas” both within our city departments and with key outside agencies like CARTA, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the Departments of Natural Resources and Transportation—partnerships essential to Folly’s sustainability. I’ve also engaged in educational and leadership events through the Municipal Association of South Carolina to better understand Folly’s unique role in the tourism industry.

My candidacy is grounded in a broad background of experience, leadership, community involvement, and independent thinking. Free from outside influence or funding, I will continue to bring a fresh perspective rooted in common sense and civility to our City’s leadership. I hope to earn your vote this November so we can continue making the Edge of America a great place to live and work.

A GLIMPSE INTO MY BACKGROUND

  • Educational Foundations
I hold a degree in Political Science/Pre-law from the University of Florida, a Masters of Public Administration (MPA) from Auburn, and a graduate degree from Marine Corps University.

  • Military Service
My career in the US Marine Corps spanned 25 years, retiring as a Colonel. My service took me from operational command (including tours in Vietnam and the Gulf War), to high-level NATO staff, and academic leadership.

  • Post-Military Profession:
In my "second career", I have held key leadership roles including: State Coordinator of Local Government Assistance (Military Affairs for State of SC), served on the Govenor's Staff (base closures), Director of Government Business (US Filter Corp), and President of RNB Technologies in the defense industry sectors.

MY COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY, VOLUNTEERISM & SERVICE

These are cornerstones of my life. My efforts include:

  • City of Folly Beach Council Member (Incumbant)

       Serving since April 2024

  • City of Folly Beach Design Review Board
Served 9 years, including 3 years as Chairman.

  • Folly Beach Civic Club
    Active
member for 10+ years, involved in community activities.

  • Warrior Surf Foundation
Serving 6 years on the Board of Directors, aiding veterans with PTSD and TBI.

  • Folly Beach Methodist Church
Serving 9+ years as Chairman of the Trustee Committee and Lay Servant.

  • Rotary International
Over 20 years of membership; currently the Veteran’s Committee Chair of the Historic Rotary Club of Charleston.

  • Community Support
We are humbled by the opportunity to Host Ukrainian refugees and traveling guests of the Charleston Symphony.

FAMILY & PERSONAL LIFE

Sam and I enjoy the simple pleasures of life – from walking on the beach, community activities, to traveling, and spending time with our family - including our two sons and six grandchildren.  We enjoy our involvement in our Folly Beach Methodist Church, and many of the outdoor activities that comes with "island life".  Sam tries her hand at pickleball from time to time (and admits she could use some practice), loves her photography, her volunteer work at the Folly Beach History museum and church, and playing her guitar.

VISION FOR FOLLY BEACH

I stand firm in the belief that our City Council's mission is to preserve and enhance the quality of life for all residents and guests. My focus will be on:
